Education and school in ancient Rome.

Fundamentals of Roman education and training

The upbringing and education of children in ancient Rome was treated responsibly almost from the moment the state was created.

Ancient Rome was a power that consisted of several provinces. The state was quite rich. In addition to monetary wealth, Ancient Rome was rich in works of art, philosophical works, mathematical discoveries, etc. All this suggests that the people of Ancient Rome were educated. The process of teaching and educating children began almost from birth.

The leading role in the formation and development of the personality of a young Roman was played by his family. It was the family that was entrusted with the duty to create the foundation of the necessary knowledge and skills, to master the child of moral and cultural norms, generally recognized rules of conduct. Family traditions were strong enough. The attitude towards the family, as a primary institution, was respectful on the part of the state. Families that were famous for their distinguished members were revered and respected in Roman society.

Religion was the basis for the education and upbringing of children, while the role of the priest in the family was played by the father. Each Roman family believed that it was patronized by a large number

gods. The head of the family was the father, he had unlimited power. The mother had somewhat lesser rights, but she occupied an honorable role in the upbringing of children, namely girls.

The girls and girls of the family were under the vigilant control of the mother until the very moment of their marriage. Their mother taught them how to run the house, cook, clean, sew, and so on. The upbringing of boys and youths up to 16 years of age was handled by the father. Together with him, they studied the procedure for conducting field work, mastered the art of owning weapons. The peculiarity was that all this time the boys and young men had to wear long hair.

During the heyday of the Roman Empire, the family gives way to the state education system. The return to family education is noted during the decline of the Empire, it was at this time that the training of the younger generation directly in the family became again leading.
