Education in Philippines with Lucili Pis-an. Part. 2

Updated: May 16, 2023

I am Lucili Pis-an, from the Philippines. In my country, we have private and public schools. Parents from the private school intervenes with school procedures and policies while the latter, are just passive about it. They are also given the liberty to suggest or propose to the teachers or even the school about ideas they might have. They can visit the school anytime to talk to the teachers concerning the performance and behavior of their child/ward. A quarterly meeting is also conducted for report card distribution and other concerns.

Grading system is performance-based by nature. More than half of the percentage of the learner’s grade is based on how they perform individually or in groups. Performance tasks include poem writing, essay writing, drawing, collage-making, scrapbooking, and others are done individually. Reporting, collage or poster making, group discussion and the like are examples of tasks done in groups. Thirty to Forty percent of their grades are written works and quarterly assessment. What is good about the group work is that, average students can get better grades if they would be grouped with those who excel in class.

Population is also larger in the public school as compared to the private school. For example, we have almost four thousand students in our school while in the private school, roughly around a thousand only. The reason for such case, is the paying of the tuition fees. Around fifty thousand pesos ($1,000) or more is the tuition fee in the private school, while there are no fees to pay in the public school. It is funded by the government, and donations from alumni and other entities are also accepted. These are converted into projects like buildings and other facilities needed.

In the Basic Education Curriculum, before a learner is enrolled in the elementary, he/she should at least have one (1) year or more years in the pre-school, and another six (6) years in the elementary. Recently, we started the Senior High School Curriculum, making it also six years. Four years Junior High and two (2) years Senior High school before entering the tertiary level. The objective of this endeavor is for the graduates to be globally competitive since it is skills based and graduates of the senior high school may land in a job after graduation whenever the student cannot afford a college degree.

Yours, Lucili Pis-an,

High school teacher, Philippines
