In Ghana, very few mothers can afford to sit at home with the baby after giving birth, more often the child either stays with her grandmother, or goes to a nursery, or accompanies her mother to work tied behind her back.
Here the whole family is ready to work hard so that their son or daughter can get an education, so that later grown-up children, in turn, work and support the whole family. Adolescents are sometimes sent to be supported by wealthier relatives, where they serve as servants in exchange for the opportunity to live and study, for example, in the capital.
You will not envy Ghanaian children. Many of them are deprived of the joy of childhood and dream of growing up as soon as possible in order to finally be among the “privileged caste” of adults. And this is not surprising for the following reasons.
📍Many schools still practice corporal punishment.
📍The simplest things, such as lollipops or ice cream, become something special and desirable.
📍Cleaning, washing dishes and other simple tasks in many families are completely entrusted to children. The locals even joke: “Finally, we have a child and we can not wash the dishes until the end of our days.”
