Turkey: kisses for lira

Little Turks get their first lira for pocket expenses for ... kisses! “In Turkey, on major national holidays, it is customary for all children, even babies, to give holiday money, even 1-2 lira ($0.5-1). Older children can get 20-50 lira ($11-27). And they are given by older relatives, for whom, as a sign of gratitude and respect, you need to kiss your hand and put it on your forehead. While the child is small, the donated money remains with the parents. When he grows up, he is taken to the store to buy something for them. And little Turks regularly begin to receive their pocket money as soon as they go to school. As a rule, they give 10-30 liras ($5.5-16) for a week. That's enough for lunch and stationery knick-knacks.

As for financial education in general, Turkish parents from childhood instill in their children a serious attitude towards money. “In this regard, in particular, the boys “go to” as the future breadwinners of the family. Dads often take their sons to work to show how hard money is to get, so they need to be appreciated.
