Valentine's Day is celebrated around the world on February 14th. In the United States of America, Valentine's Day has been celebrated since 1777. This is one of the most popular American holidays. On February 14, Americans honor the memory of St. Valentine and sincerely express their love to dear people - parents, loved ones, teachers, friends, etc.
The tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day in the United States was adopted from the British settlers. In 1827, the first mass production of valentines for the holiday was organized in Massachusetts.
In the 2nd half of the twentieth century, it became popular to give gifts along with Valentines on this Day. Common gifts for women were roses, chocolates or candies. The Americans have established the production of red and white caramels. The red color of the candy meant passion, white - the purity of love. Sweets were packed in heart-shaped boxes.
In honor of Valentine's Day, many Americans host a festive dinner, dance party, or private party at home.
Some schools organize a holiday program in which children participate. They dance and sing, play different games, etc. On this holiday, children give handmade gifts to friends and teachers.
