What to avoid when pregnant 🤰🏼

Every parent wants to give their child the best start in life, and it’s something you can work on before your child is even born. As your body changes, some of your habits may need to change too. Here are some tips for things to avoid when pregnant to help keep your growing baby safe.

1. Alcohol: It is strongly recommended to avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy, as it increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

2. Tobacco: Smoking during pregnancy can lead to numerous complications, including premature birth, low birth weight, and an increased risk of birth defects and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It is also advisable to avoid secondhand smoke.

3. Illicit drugs: Using illegal drugs during pregnancy can have severe consequences for both the mother and the baby. It can cause premature birth, low birth weight, developmental issues, and various other complications.

4. Certain medications: Consult with your healthcare provider about the safety of any medications you take during pregnancy. Avoid taking medications that are known to be harmful to the developing fetus unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.

5. Excessive caffeine: High levels of caffeine intake have been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and preterm birth. It is recommended to limit your caffeine consumption during pregnancy.

6. Raw or undercooked food: To avoid the risk of foodborne illnesses such as salmonella or listeria, it's important to avoid consuming raw or undercooked meat, eggs, seafood, and unpasteurized dairy products.

7. Certain fish: Some types of fish, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, can contain high levels of mercury, which can harm the developing nervous system of the baby. Limit your consumption of fish and opt for low-mercury varieties like salmon, trout, and shrimp.

8. Hot tubs and saunas: Excessive heat can be harmful during pregnancy. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and prolonged exposure to high temperatures, as it may increase the risk of birth defects.

9. Certain household chemicals: Minimize your exposure to harsh cleaning products, pesticides, and solvents, as they can be hazardous to your health and potentially affect the baby.

10. Stress and excessive physical strain: High levels of stress and physical strain can have negative effects on pregnancy. Practice relaxation techniques and seek support when needed.
